Vitamin D has really come to the fore as a "must have" daily supplement, especially since it was established as one of the most important micronutrients out there when it comes to the immune system. It is one of the most extensively researched vitamins and for good reason.
Also known as cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) and ergocalciferol (vitamin D2), vitamin D in any form is now one of the most widely consumed supplements in the world. Vitamin D is easily consumed through diet, but much of it is biologically inactive, so the most effective way to meet vitamin D requirements is through ultraviolet rays (UV rays) from that big yellow fireball in the sky the sun us.
However, the sun's rays aren't enough for us to spend a lot of time inside, meaning we can't always rely on the sun to meet our vitamin D needs. Some people also have darker skin, meaning they have higher levels. melanin which reduces the body's ability to use the sun for vitamin D. Vitamin D requirements are also higher in children and women during pregnancy, making oral vitamin D supplementation an essential tool to prevent deficiencies in the general population.
Vitamin K comes in a variety of different forms, known as vitamers. The types of vitamin K are either phylloquinones (vitamin K1) or menaquinones (vitamin K2).
Vitamin K1 should be consumed primarily through a diet of leafy greens and various other vegetables, but vast amounts of the public do not consume enough of these food groups to meet their K1 requirements, and even if they do, K1 in leafy greens it is not Not absorbed well by the body at all (top tip: microwave your greens to optimize absorption).
